How Free E Waste Collection Central Auckland Upcycled RAM

On Sunday August 30th 2026, a local resident located directly between Mount Eden and Mount Roskill contacted us explaining that they had a couple of computer parts that they wished to dispose of but did not have transport to get to our Central Auckland free E-Waste Collection point (1 Keystone Avenue, Mount Roskill, Auckland). We did not query whether the resident could have walked to drop-off the E-Waste because we know that individuals can have mobility issues and it some cases the spare computer parts may be in multiple boxes, heavy or otherwise bulky or hard to carry. So, as usual, the team at Ethical E-Waste were happy to help.

We arrived in the evening, and after a small bit of difficulty reaching the customer, we were presented with a box containing a Power Supply Unit (PSU), a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and a small bundle of computer memory sticks (RAM) with one particularly nice looking stick that, along with the others, had been acquired as broken some time ago.

Having retrieved, documented and safely stored the components, we transported them back to our facilities for further identification, sorting and related processing. The hard disk drive was stored surely and subsequently forensic wiped in addition to other standard processing. This is all performed for free as part of our local e waste collection service which in this case included a direct pick-up from the door in Mount Eden and other Central Auckland and Wider Auckland suburbs for free.

We were fortunate to have time the following day to begin assessing these sticks of memory and to our surprise, multiple sticks were found to be in perfectly good working order, including the one particular stick of memory that was DDR4, 16GB and a very modern brand - it only required a small repair that while complicated, was a quick job for our team! Some times you get lucky, and that is a good outcome for everyone, because this unwanted computer component sitting in a box has now saved a local Mount Albert small organisation as they no longer have to purchase an individual stick of DDR4 16GB memory. This is a substantial saving for them in time and effort from having to source this part and also for the environment. Now this stick of computer memory can work hard in helping this organisation process office documents and other tasks that they need carried out. That is real, fast up-cycling in-action! Please note that this component was supplied by Ethical E Waste entirely free of charge (this is not always possible but in this case we could).
